For a long period, we try to present geography as an exact based science field, which is not only based on theory and memorialization but as well on “exact” science data. For the verification of the theory in practice, it is necessary to obtain those data effectively and also effectively process them.
We introduced field geography exercises to our classes right away at the establishment of new school study plans more than 10 years ago. We started with common tools such as tape measure and protractors, but we quickly switched to more modern data collecting methods with the help of laboratory measurement systems. Later, we were helped a lot by project EXPOZ (www.expoz.cz), which took place between the years 2011 and 2012. Thanks to the project we were well equipped with instruments and we developed innovative methods for use of these technologies in practice.
From that moment on we also date our mutually beneficial cooperation with PROFIMEDIA s.r.o. company (http://www.profimedia-cz.cz/), who is the distributor of the PASCO laboratory system in the Czech Republic. Thanks to the previous projects and cooperation on the creation of E-MOLE magazine (www.e-mole.cz), we have experience with most of the systems available on our market, whose performance is more or less comparable. As the key factor for the selection of a suitable system and user-friendly use, we consider close cooperation with the supplier as a necessity. It is because he can provide us not only with the delivery of the system but also with personal training, high-quality manuals, and best practices created and checked by experts in the field. When selecting equipment for field exercises, our experience has proven to us, that we need a device that is compact, is easy to manipulate, and provides the durability of supplied sensors.
During the field exercises, but also at the normal lessons, we try to lead the pupils to careful data collection. Measuring systems make the collection easier, faster, and make the work of students more efficient. Besides, it provides them with more time for data evaluation. Using devices has become a necessity in practice. It also prepares students much better for their future studies or professional life. Not least is the fact that the more modern ways of data collection, even when results are sometimes very similar to those from traditional ways, are more attractive to students.
